"Platinum," "VIP," and "luxury" desert safari packages are marketing terms, not standardized categories. Two operators can call very different experiences the same name. Here's what to actually check.

The real differentiators

• Camp size and privacy. A premium safari should mean a smaller, less crowded camp — not the same 200-person setup with a nicer name.
• Vehicle and driver ratio. Fewer people per Land Cruiser, and a driver experienced enough to read the dunes rather than follow a fixed route.
• Timing around light. Genuine premium experiences are built around golden hour and sunset, not a schedule that happens to include them.
• Food quality. Easiest thing to fake with a nicer tent and the same buffet. Ask what's served and whether it's a live station or a steam tray.
• What's actually included. Falconry, quad biking, and sandboarding are often "available" at extra cost even in premium packages.

How to vet it before booking

Ask for recent photos or video from the actual camp, not the marketing shots. Ask how many people the camp holds on a typical evening. Ask if the vehicle is exclusive to your group. The answers tell you more than the package name does.
